Listen to Owasso Rams Head Coach Brian Montonati visit with Grant Merrill during the postgame show on Tuesday night.
BARTLESVILLE – If the Owasso Rams seemed young and inexperienced to some, they certainly didn’t show it on the road at Bartlesville on Tuesday night. In their first game of the season, the Rams defeated the Bruins 65-58, riding the shoulders of guards Hayden Peterson and Seth Pomeroy the whole way through.
“We started out kind of slow,” Head Coach Brian Montonati said after the game. “We knew they were going to come at us. At the half, we made some defensive adjustments and had one of those Eddie Sutton style ‘do-better’ talks. They played lights out from there.”
Peterson led the way with 26 points on the night, while Pomeroy settled in with 23.
“We know what we have with those guys,” Montonati said. “We know they have to carry the burden in scoring for us.”
While the head coach was proud of the effort presented by that dynamic duo, he says he was just as impressed with the fight in several players who didn’t come to the table this year with a lot of experience.
“We don’t have a lot of experience. We have freshmen and a ton of sophomores on our bench, and juniors who haven’t played yet,” Montanati said. “Bartlesville is always an iffy place to play, and I’ve seen a lot of bad things happen here.”
One starter who wasn’t heavy in the scoring column was David Dean, who played all four quarters.
“We’re baptizing him by fire,” Montonati said. “For not playing in a varsity game and having no varsity experience, and having that composure against a good varsity team. It is going to be fun to watch this group grow up over the year.”
As the Rams prepare for a road trip next week, they’ll work on a few things in practice this week.
“We have to get better on the defensive end,” Mononati said. “We’re an undersized team. We have to box out and rebound, and attack the glass.”
The head coach says he is hoping to have the help of several football players who are getting into shape for the basketball season.
The Rams will travel to Booker T. Washington next Tuesday night.
